Formlabs Tough 2000 Resin
Tough 2000 Resin
Tough 2000 Resin offers strength and stiffness similar to ABS plastic, making it ideal for functional parts that need to withstand long-term use without bending. Use Tough 2000 Resin to prototype strong, rigid parts and create jigs and fixtures that require minimal deflection.

Tough 2000 Resin
Formlabs has launched a new resin material—Tough 2000 Resin! As an improved version of the original Tough Resin, Tough 2000 Resin is compatible with our desktop SLA printers, including the Form 3 and Form 2.
Tough 2000 Resin is designed for printing rigid and strong parts that are difficult to bend, such as mechanical housings, jigs and fixtures, mechanical connectors, and prototypes subject to wear.
Tough 2000 Resin is the latest addition to the Tough and Durable family. Alongside Tough 1500 and the original Tough Resin, it is engineered to handle compression, tension, bending, and impact without breaking, while offering distinct mechanical properties such as tensile modulus (e.g., 2000 MPa for Tough 2000).
In terms of stiffness and strength, Tough 2000 Resin most closely resembles ABS plastic within the Tough and Durable family. It features enhanced mechanical performance and a new gray finish. Improvements over the original Tough Resin include:
- Reduced brittleness: over 100% increase in elongation at break
- Increased strength and stiffness: approx. 15% improvement in flexural strength and modulus
- Better high-temperature performance: approx. 25% higher heat deflection temperature
- Professional appearance: new gray tone
Mechanical Performance Comparison
Elongation at Break | Flexural Strength | Flexural Modulus
Tough 2000 Resin | 48% | 65 MPa | 1.9 GPa |
Tough Resin (v5) | 23% | 57 MPa | 1.6 GPa |
Improvement | 109% | 14% | 19% |
Normally, strength, stiffness, and elongation are opposing properties, but Tough 2000 Resin achieves a net gain in all these areas due to its updated formulation. It balances toughness and strength using ingredients similar to Rigid and Elastic resins, and requires specific resin tanks: Resin Tank LT for Form 2 and Resin Tank V2 for Form 3.
Thermal Performance Comparison
HDT @ 1.8 MPa | HDT @ 0.45 MPa
Tough 2000 Resin | 53°C | 63°C |
Tough Resin (v5) | 43°C | 47°C |
Improvement | 23% | 34% |
Professional Appearance
User surveys indicated a preference for a more neutral color. While blue transparent prints were iconic, the new dark gray enables more professional applications across diverse environments.
When to Use Tough 2000 Resin?
Tough 2000 Resin is suitable for engineering, product development, and production workflows. It is ideal for wear-resistant prototypes, mechanical connectors, and casings—such as the motor bracket shown below. Its improved mechanical properties allow for confident product iteration without fear of brittle failure.
It also excels in making jigs and fixtures requiring low deflection and high strength, such as drill guides. The higher HDT ensures reliable performance in elevated temperature environments.
Tough 2000 Resin is an ideal prototyping material for parts intended to be manufactured in ABS. With its ABS-like properties, it is perfect for simulating packaging and housings for consumer products.
